Dance Meditation as a Path to Unity Consciousness

Dance meditation

Tantra is all about the meeting of opposite polarities. Wherever opposite polarities meet, you will find God Consciousness or Goddess Consciousness, creating a deeper connection to life itself. If you can really understand this, you have a master key to life.

If you consider carefully, from the one comes the two, and from the two comes the one. And from there, from the one comes the two. It goes on like that ad infinitum.

The seed form of this is what is called the Vesica Pisces, or in Sanskrit, ‘Jagat Yoni.’ And from there manifests the sacred geometry of the Flower of Life. These are the basic building blocks for all of life to manifest.

The Transformative Power of Sound, Silence & Consciousness

When you want to come to oneness, unity consciousness, you play with two opposite polarities, bringing them together. And from there automatically will come the one, unity consciousness.

This is mimicked through the sexual act also. You bring two people together, male and female. They enter into sexual union, and from that union comes the one, the child. This phenomenon is reproduced on the physical level and also on all other levels, reflecting the deep mind-body connection within Tantra.

So when we want to go into unity consciousness, we need to imagine which two opposite polarities we can play with in order for this to happen. And there's so many different possibilities. We can play with death and birth, or sex and spirit, or light and dark, or sound and silence and so on.

For example, in the Kogi tradition in Colombia, they have manifested almost an assembly line for how to create enlightened beings. They figured out if you put an infant into a dark cave and they remain there for their first 16 to 18 years, when they come into the light for the first time, they will become Enlightened instantly. It's that contrast of darkness and light, played out over the span of years, that creates such tremendous transformation.

Through the darkness, the growing child experiences DMT release and their inner ecstasy and inner wisdom bubbles up. And then when they see the beauty of the nature for the first time, in the light, instantly Enlightenment happens.

Or you could play with sexuality, bringing awareness to sexual union. In the meeting of the two, you obtain unity consciousness.

Osho played with contradictions a lot which serves in the expansion of consciousness very effectively. He was continuously playing with opposites and then inspiring us in varied ways to come into unity consciousness. One of the ways he played was through his discourses, speaking in contradictions. He would speak very eloquently about one particular subject and then maybe the next night speaking exactly the opposite viewpoint with as much passion.

The brain of the listener gets completely discombobulated because one night he's speaking this, and you feel, “oh, that's the ultimate truth, definitively. That's it. This is really it.”

Then the next night he speaks against the subject of the previous night’s discourse, exactly the opposite! And then you say to yourself, “Oh, this is the ultimate truth! The previous conclusion was wrong!” So he used to play like that, and finally your brain just has to expand to contain all contradictions! And this expansion of the capacity of the brain leads to the awakening of genius within.

In the meeting of contradictions you find a satori space.

How Silence Creates Space Within the Mind

Self discovery and self love

One of the ways my meditation teacher, Osho, played with contradictions was through sound and silence.

If you're in silence, it has to be 100% pin drop, silence. In festival times in his community, we might have had up to 20,000 people singing and dancing in ecstasy then dropping into pin drop silence, not a single sound. Nothing. Zero.

You can imagine the power of 20,000 people sitting in silence, what kind of effect that has. Because you're creating that unity consciousness within the silence. And he would contrast that with music and dance.

Ecstatic Dance as a Form of Mindful Movement

There would be very, very uplifting, powerful live music. People would go into ecstatic dance through expressive movement and then drop into pin drop silence. He played with this type of contrast a lot.

In the meditation method I share below, we will play with pin drop silence alternating with dance music. In this context, the dance becomes a meditation also.

"The dancer disappears into the dance, till only the dance remains."

There's no person, just the dance. You're melting yourself completely into the dance, allowing emotions, creativity, and self expression to move freely. This is what Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls a flow state.

And then, we will be contrasting that with silence and deep self awareness. And in the silence, there's no person there. You're just dropping into void, complete void space, Samadhi.

Stillness, Surrender & the Journey Into Void

healing the soul

Now let's talk about void space.

There are, according to Osho, two steps on the spiritual path. The first is very easy for women, very, very challenging for men. And that first step is surrender.

Surrender is very much connected to the heart and the ability to connect deeply with another. That's why it's easy for women. Our deepest longing actually is to surrender.

If we can find a man who is worthy of our surrender, that will be the ultimate bliss for us. Often we don't find a man that we feel is worthy of surrender. Why? Because he is not yet open in his third chakra.

To be open in the third chakra, he has to become vast enough to contain contradictions. The most contradictory being on earth is the feminine, because we're constantly changing with our cycle. So that confuses him very much. He doesn't know how to expand to contain that. He's always trying to solve it as if it's a problem. “Oh, you're crying? That's a problem! Let me solve it.” Instead of, “Oh, you're crying? Okay, I'll just be here present with you as you cry.”

That's actually what the woman is craving, his presence. And his ability to expand, to become vast enough to contain all the contradictions she embodies.

So she tests him to see, are you that man? And only if he's that man will she surrender. Otherwise she becomes very bitchy, trying to test him. So this is a situation that goes on between male and female.

The Feminine Path vs Stillness & the Masculine Relationship With Void

The woman's path is love, devotion, surrender. This is our natural spiritual path. We like to be devoted to someone, whether that is our man, child, a god or an angel. There always has to be somebody there in our form of spirituality.

Now the second step on the spiritual path is very easy for men, almost impossible for women; and that is dropping into void, aloneness, no thing, no person, nowhere, nothing. What Buddha used to call ‘nirvana’ blowing out the flame; there is just void.

Women hate this tremendously and won't like to go anywhere near it, if at all possible. However, for men, it is natural and easy to go into void space.

There is a very funny comedian who was giving a show. He offered a sketch, showing about the difference between men and women's brains.

He was calling the space that men go into, ‘The Nothing Box.’ He is pointing out that periodically, men just like to go into nothingness. But when he is in that space, women get very suspicious! She will begin nagging him; “What's going on in your mind?” “Nothing,” he says. She answers; “That's not possible. There must be something! Who are you thinking about?” And the man is just in nothing. He may reply, “I'm just in a nowhere, nothing.”

Because he has actually an innate yearning to go into no mind, into nothingness. That's how he recharges himself. So if he's just sitting there dully, he's in his nothing box and you should leave him in there.

I don't know how prevalent this is these days, but when I was growing up, it was very common that if a couple was making a house, they would have to make what they called a ‘den’ for the man, like his cave. They knew he regularly needs ‘cave time.’

He needs a time to be alone in his own space in order to feel relaxed and release tension. Nobody bothers him in there. So that cave was considered very essential. And this is simply true because it's his nature.

If a woman wants to go into the void, usually she will have to be initiated by a man into that space. She will not go on her own. She will see zero reason why she should do such a thing. Similarly, the man sees zero reason to go into love, devotion and surrender.

He finds no reason why he should go there. He needs the woman to be the Initiatress onto the Tantra path, into surrender. And then the man is the Initiator into that last step, which is void.

Creating Balance Between Silence & Connection

benefits of dance meditation

On the Tantra path, we continuously play with silent meditation and witnessing as well as with love and devotion. And we play with it sometimes even in the same meditation, the same Ritual.

Another important point in this respect; as a woman, you also have an inner man. As a masculine you also have an inner woman. So in Tantra, we keep developing both qualities. Of course, if you're a woman, you may emphasise love and devotion, but you should still cultivate the opposite. Because when you flower in the ultimate awakening, you're going to pop through into the opposite. You will become that opposite.

When woman flowers spiritually, she will flower into meditation, witnessing, and profound self awareness. When a man flowers, he will flower into love and devotion. Each one flowers into its opposite.

So this means the male is the guru for the female. The female is the guru for the male. And if we can remember this in relationship, it will help us a lot. “What can I learn from this opposite mirror who's in front of me?” This is very important.

Cultivating, as an integral part of your practise as a woman, some degree of silence and witnessing will help you very profoundly on your path. And likewise, for a man to cultivate some degree of love and devotion on his path will help him tremendously.

In regards to this, as we cultivate our natural way of opening up, it is good to focus on that part of the body which holds our natural power as we meditate. For women, it is good to focus on the breasts and heart chakra as a central focus of meditation. For men, it is very helpful to focus on the perineum, balls, and lingam. This will bring him a feeling of deep rootedness, groundedness, security, presence, power, and being at home.

Usually men get very angry and impatient because the woman is trying to force him to open his heart and he needs just to go in his balls. And she's ignoring that. In men's work, men need to learn to come back home to his 1st chakra. Once he is at home there, then it will be very easy for him to open his heart.

For a man to be told to open his heart is exactly the same as if he tells a woman to just open her legs. She would not be comfortable with that because she is wishing to first anchor through the heart, through love.

So a man will be looking at you like you're crazy when you say open the heart, when he just wants to be in his balls, actually. But he's been taught to be ashamed of that longing, so that brings up a lot of stuff.

Mindfulness, Stillness & the Monkey Mind

When we go into silent meditation, the first thing that happens is that the mind is freaking out because so much inner tension begins surfacing. The mind is used to have control and it talks to us all the time. “We should do this, we should behave like that.” The most common thing that happens is when a person goes into silent meditation, the mind activates, it gets crazy. Because now it's in danger of losing control, of needing to surrender to the being.

So it will start freaking out, saying whatever thought you have hidden or forgotten. Or maybe it will start saying, “oh there are ants here, or flies, or mosquitoes, or the music outside is disturbing!”

We have a very good exercise we call the crazy mind or the monkey mind that we do, where you write down dream of consciousness whatever the mind is saying without censoring. Through this, you will see how much informations the mind will come up with in just two minutes! And how the mind jumps around from here to there, just like a monkey swinging from multiple trees.

Creating Space Between Thoughts

This monkey mind is very common. When this happens and we are in silent meditation, just go back to your breathing. And speak to your mind. You can say, “now I am in silence, go away. Later on we can deal with that fire which is blazing on the other side of the world. But not now. Right now, I am meditating.”

And if you feel the need to sneeze, please speak to your body. And say, “now I am in silence, no need to sneeze.” Because the egoic mind will sneakily try to take over the body, especially when you are in meditation.

Suddenly you will feel itchy or you will want to sneeze or cough. Or suddenly some pain will come up and you will say, “oh my back!” And then you will start to move and your meditation will be compromised.

Speak to it with clear intention. “Now we are in silent meditation.” And with the awareness there, this itching will evaporate. The need for coughing will disappear. The need for sneezing will disappear. You just need to have awareness and determination.

Embodied Presence & Preparing the Body for Meditation

Hear the silence during meditation

Now I want to share positions for meditation.

In most forms of meditation, we want to have a straight back. In order to have a straight back, it's very helpful to lift the bum up slightly. Some people may need extra cushioning.

The moment you put your bum up and you relax your lower belly, your back will automatically become straight in a very relaxed way.

A lot of women are in the habit of tensing the belly because you're thinking it should be flat. So just let go of that idea and breathe very naturally in the belly. And you'll see the back will just float into an upright position with zero effort.

There's different ways you can position the legs. This is one way where the top part of the feet are resting on the mat. This is very comfortable for some people. And another position could be one foot comes up into the groin area. This is called half lotus.

Another position, you could put the side of the foot just in between the thigh and the calf. Or, you could go into full lotus. Full lotus depends on how much yoga you've been doing whether it will be easy or challenging. The reason full lotus is a prized position is because there is no leakage of energy in this position.

And then there's also seiza. This is Japanese way where you are kneeling with one toe on top of the other one while you are sitting on your heels. For some people, this is very comfortable. You could also put a cushion in between your kneeling legs. And this can also be very comfortable. So it depends on your body type, your comfort level.

Meditation, Full Attention & Mindful Awareness

Normally, when we go into meditation, we just spend a few moments finding that comfortable zone. Once we find it, we don't move for the entire duration of the meditation. We don't cough, sneeze, move, make any sound, wipe sweat, nothing.

And we simply observe phenomena happening moment by moment. We could observe our thoughts as if they're just traffic passing on the road. We maintain impartial observation like a scientist.

A scientist is impartially observing phenomena. Maybe they have a microscope and they're just looking and observing tiny life forms. In the same way, you're simply observing phenomena that are passing by in your body, mind, or emotional landscape.

You could also focus on your breath coming in and going out. And that's very easy. For women, Osho recommends to focus on the breath coming in and out of the belly. And for men, he recommends focussing on the breath coming in and out of the nostrils.

For today, I would really recommend that you try this and see how you feel. When a woman witnesses the breath coming in and out of the belly, you're tuning to your emotional intelligence, your sense of feeling. It's a very natural door for the feminine. So women, you can try it today.

Dance Meditation Instructions

Express yourself with dance meditation

10 minutes silent sitting, 10 minutes dancing, alternating for one hour. During the dancing part of this meditation, the dancer disappears in the dance till only the dance remains. Now, when you're dancing, you are not just lazily moving. You are absorbed completely by the music and becoming the music through your dance.

Get possessed by the music, the rhythm, and the freedom of movement. Start moving as if the music itself is taking you, allowing joy and expressive movement to fully emerge, and you're getting lost into that. And then, again, after 10 minutes dance, we will come into 10 minutes silence.

Begin with silence and we will be ending the meditation with dance. Each phase of silence alternating with dance is 10 minutes and there are 6 phases in total, making this a one hour meditation.
