The Chakra System’s Role in Enlightenment

Dec 12, 2025
The chakra system

"Consider your essence as light rays from centre to centre up the vertebrae, and so rises 'livingness' in you. Or the spaces between, feel this as lightning." (From the 5000 year old scripture; Vigyan Bhairav Tantra)

Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means ‘wheel of light’. Traditionally there are seven main chakras, which are the energy centers of the etheric body. The chakras appear as wheel-like vortices of pure energy and are sometimes referred to as ‘lotuses’.

They spin at great speed and in a spiritual adept they shine as radiant energy. The chakras lie along the nave of the spine and through them a person’s spirit and soul become receptive to and communicate with cosmic energies. C.G. Jung referred to the chakras as the ‘gateways of consciousness’. Each energy center has its own purpose, association and connection.

Understanding The Chakra Energy Centers

You can imagine a faceted crystal, which functions as a prism. The pure light of existence shines through the prism, and is broken up into a rainbow of colours and frequencies. Each frequency carries a certain life lesson, which is accessed through a particular area of the human body.

Each chakra in this sense has a gift to offer, which takes the form of an experiential learning process. When we have solved the koan, or opened up the dormant energy of a particular chakra, we become awakened and wise in regards to that particular life lesson. In this way, our consciousness evolves and our capacity for living in bliss expands.

Kundalini Energy and the Chakras

kundalini moving through the physical body

In the ancient model of spiritual evolution, practiced by Yoga and Tantra, the aspirant opens up their dormant life energy, known as Kundalini, held at the base of the spine. As Kundalini energy rises in and up through the body, simultaneously it cleanses, opens up and heals any stagnation in the Chakra system. Through this process, the aspirant learns the life lessons held in each chakra and becomes progressively more and more wise.

Once this has been achieved, the seeker is then able to become a conduit for the descent of universal energy, moving from crown to pelvis and on down through the legs and feet, into the earth, thereby accessing and embodying universal consciousness. When the chakra system is open to the descent of divine energy, (deeksha) this is known as being ‘vertically aligned.’ Such a person is no more living in a fragmented and stagnant energetic system, but is open and flowing on all levels. Such a person literally becomes ‘walking divinity.’

In order to embark on the journey of awakening Kundalini energy, it is imperative that the aspirant first learns how to achieve conscious emotional fluidity.

Sexual Orgasm and Cosmic Orgasm

It is important to learn the language of orgasm, which is contained at the sex center, as this experience will be of utmost importance all the way through the chakra journey. As each individual chakra opens, it offers a unique orgasmic experience. And when all chakras are open, including the crown chakra, this leads to Mahamudra, (meaning ‘the great gesture arising out of the Ultimate Orgasm with the Universe’.)

Sex and Samadhi Are One: The Tantra Map

There is a saying in Tantra; ‘no mud, no lotus’. Without the mud at the bottom of the lake, a lotus will not be able to grow. The rich, nutrient dense mud gives nourishment to the roots, and from there the stem can grow up through the waters of the lake and finally blossom as a magnificent lotus on the surface of the lake.

In the same way, our sexual energy functions as the rich mud from where our life force energy can grow up through the chakra system and develop to its fullest flowering of enlightened consciousness at the crown chakra. This brings us to the non-dual understanding that in fact, Sex and Samadhi are one.

All Colours Merging into White Light

the chakra theory and spiritual awareness

As we move on the Tantra Journey, we live and enjoy each colour of the rainbow within our body, mind, and emotional system, interacting with the subtle energy that flows through our chakras. As we learn to open up fully to these spectral energies, we are able to finally embrace all of our aspects. When all colours meet and merge, they dissolve into white light.

When we are able to fully open up the chakra system, we become literally, a being of light, orgasmic and expanded on all levels and in all dimensions at the same time. With the support of transformational methods offered by Tantra, you can access the flow of your full potential in each moment.

The Phenomenon Of The Soul Mate

When a couple practices Tantra Meditation together in intimacy, they are able to activate a merging of their positive and receptive polarities of the chakra system, leading to expansive love and inner ecstasy. When all the seven chakras of the couple merge, this is the phenomenon of the Soul Mate. They become one soul in two bodies. The Tantric Journey for couples leads to cosmic consciousness.

The Life Lessons of the Chakras

energy flow through the energy channels

Each chakra is aligned with an element, a colour, special sounds and carries a particular life lesson within itself. As we open and activate the potential of each chakra, simultaneously we grow and evolve into greater wisdom and awakening of various facets of inner ecstasy.

The lower chakras and emotional health ad physical health

Mûlâdhâra Chakra/Root Chakra

The First Chakra, also known as the Root Chakra or Muladhara Chakra, is located in the pelvic area of the body, including genitals and anus.

It is centered around security, groundedness, rootedness, earthiness, our instinctual animal nature and sexuality.

Muladhara is a positive polarity for the masculine, receptive for the feminine.

sacral chakra, self esteem and personal power

Svadhishthana Chakra/Sacral Chakra

The second Chakra, known as the sacral chakra, located in the lower belly invites us into a space where we can access conscious emotional fluidity. It is in tune with the water element and changeability. It offers a portal into the dimensions of both birth and death. The way to open and receive the lessons inherent in Svadhisthana is through our vulnerability, softness, receptivity, allowing and letting go.

Svadhisthana is a positive polarity for the feminine, receptive for the masculine.

the subtle body and chakras

Manipura Chakra/Solar Plexus Chakra

The Third Chakra, also known as the solar plexus chakra, is located in the center of the solar plexus and is about becoming vast enough to contain contradictions in life. When we are faced with contradictions, the tendency is to choose one aspect and reject the other. This creates internal war, leading to stress.

A perfect example of two contradictions are; power and vulnerability. When we can be powerful and vulnerable at the same time, we have learned one of the most important life lessons. Wisdom happens within when we are able to expand our consciousness to contain all the contradictions. Through this, we find peace and wholeness.

Manipura is a positive polarity for the masculine, receptive for the feminine.

heart chakra relates to emotions

Anâhata Chakra/Heart Chakra

The Fourth Chakra, known as the Heart Chakra (Anahata), located in the center of the chest, takes us on a journey deeper and deeper into the heart principle. Chinese medicine describes layers of the heart starting with ‘the heart protector’ and as we go deeper, accessing the true nature of the heart which is pristine incorruptible love, aligned with spirit. There is an ancient saying, that God is love or love is God. In the most profound aspect of the heart chakra we will experience God, living in our heart as infinite love.

The heart is always radiating love and transforming anything it comes in contact with into love, because love is the essence of life on this planet. If we go deeper into what it means to be human, we will always come to love and only love. There are four stages of love; loving yourself, loving another in deep intimacy, loving the whole and finally, becoming love itself. Unconditional love is a key aspect of the Heart Chakra, fostering emotional relationships and social bonds.

Anahata is a positive polarity for the feminine, receptive for the masculine.

the throat chakra and breathing exercises

Vishudda Chakra/Throat Chakra

The Fifth Chakra, (Throat Chakra,) is located just under the Adam’s apple in the center of the throat area. It invites us into ‘Self-Realization.’ When this chakra is open, we are no longer guided by our egoic mind but rather, become a co-creator with the divine. This Chakra helps us express the ultimate truth of creation through various forms of creative manifestation. As we dissolve the egoic mind we allow the divine to speak and take action through us.

Vishudda is a positive polarity for the masculine, receptive for the feminine.

spiritual liberation and human consciousness - the third eye

Agya/Ajna Chakra/Third Eye Chakra

The Sixth Chakra, also known as the ‘Third Eye Chakra’, is located in the center of the brain, in and around the pineal gland. The pineal gland is known as ‘the gland of light’ because it contains tiny crystals emitting phosphorescent light. Melatonin is released from the pineal gland, which controls waking and sleeping cycles. The pineal gland is also involved in ‘spiritual sleep’ and ‘spiritual awakening.’

The access point for Agya is between and slightly above the level of the eyebrows. As we open this chakra it very powerfully awakens us to our soul light which helps to find the correct path in life according to our soul calling.

In the sixth chakra, we access clairvoyance beyond time and mind. Our telepathic abilities are activated and this in turn awakens our inner ecstasy potential, linked to DMT release. Our aura and etheric presence becomes more radiant.

Agya is a positive polarity for the feminine, receptive for the masculine.

Colour: Indigo Blue

Element: Etheric Dimension

Activation Sound: (nasal) Eeeee

Bij Mantra: Om'

Crown chakra sahasrara and higher consciousness and self knowledge

Sahasrara/Crown Chakra

The Seventh Chakra is located at the crown of the head and includes the etheric dimension above the crown. It opens a portal into universal consciousness. Sahasrara, (meaning Thousand petaled lotus) contains all of the chakras and their life lessons within itself. The whole of our energetic blueprint from sex to superconsciousness is contained in the Sahasrara chakra.

Through Sahasrara, we expand our consciousness into a multidimensional experience of reality, integrating heaven and earth. Here we go beyond duality, embracing the wholeness of life. Right and left sides of the brain merge and our genius is awakened, a state of consciousness referred to as ‘Enlightenment’ or ‘Mahamudra.’

Sahasrara is beyond duality, where Yin and Yang merge into oneness.

Colour: Violet merging into white light

Element: Etheric Dimension

Activation Sound: Hoom

Bij Mantra: Om

“Energy is needed, and energy is always beautiful. If you don't know how to use it, it becomes ugly; then it goes on running astray. The energy has to go higher. Sex is the lowest center of your being -- but that is not all: you have seven centers of your being. As the energy moves upwards, if you know the key how to release it upwards, as it moves from one center to another, you feel so many transformations.

When the energy comes to the heart chakra, to the center of the heart, you become so full of love you become love. When the energy comes to the third-eye center you become consciousness, awareness. When the energy comes to the last chakra, sahasrar, you bloom, you flower, your tree of life has come to a fulfillment: you become a Buddha. But the energy is the same. Don't condemn; don't suppress. Transform. Be more understanding, alert; only then will you be able to enter in totality.” Osho, "Yoga: The Alpha and the Omega, Vol 5, #6"

FAQ

What religion believes in chakras?

Chakras are rooted in the ancient spiritual traditions of India, particularly within Tantra, Yoga, and certain forms of Hinduism and Buddhism. Yet their wisdom is not confined to any single religion. The chakra system offers a universal map of inner evolution, experienced by mystics across time and culture.

What do the 7 chakras mean?

The seven chakras represent different layers of human consciousness, each one connected to a specific area of the body, a life lesson, and a quality of energy. As we move through them, we meet ourselves more deeply, from survival and sexuality, to love, truth, vision, and ultimately, unity with all that is. They are gateways into our own becoming, each offering a step toward greater presence, awareness, and wholeness.

How do I unlock the potential hidden in my chakras?

Chakras don’t open through force or willpower. They open when we become willing to feel. When we release the habit of holding back or pushing through, and instead bring loving attention to the places in us that feel stuck or closed. Through meditation, movement, sound, breath, and emotional awareness, the energy in each chakra begins to soften and flow.

What happens when all 7 chakras are activated?

When the chakra system is fully awakened, energy flows freely from root to crown and one becomes open to the descent of grace. You feel alive in every cell, present in your body, and open to the divine. There is no longer separation between spirit and flesh, between pleasure and prayer. You experience a deep harmony, with yourself, with others, and with existence itself. It’s a lived, embodied experience of awakening, a state where love, awareness, and vitality become your natural way of being.
