Sacred Sexuality: The Key to Loving with Your Whole Self

Aug 06, 2025
sacred sexuality

You might think sacred sexuality is just sex with a sprinkle of spirituality. But in reality, it’s a full-blown invitation to transform the way you connect with yourself and others. It’s about bringing every part of you, body, mind, emotions, and soul, into the bedroom (or wherever you choose) and treating intimacy as a portal to something bigger, allowing you to experience connection in a profound and tangible manner.

Time melts.

Boundaries dissolve.

And what’s left? A wild, unfiltered sense of joy and unity that feels like it came straight from the divine. This deeper connection helps you feel connected, enriching your sense of aliveness and intimacy.

So, what’s sacred about it? It’s discovering that your body is pointing you toward expanded pleasure, divine connection, and your own untapped brilliance. Sacred sexuality is where you stop having sex and start becoming sex.

And trust me, you’ll never look at intimacy the same way again.

Understanding Your Own Desires

Desire isn’t just a passing thought or a spark of lust, it’s your aliveness speaking to you, asking you to listen. It’s a pulse, a fire, a key to what makes you feel awake and vibrant in your body and soul. And yet, so many of us bury our desires beneath layers of shame and judgment, as if what we long for is somehow too much. This is where healing becomes essential, as addressing and overcoming these negative messages allows us to access our sacred sexuality. Your desires are yours for a reason, they are the very essence of your vitality, and they deserve to be known and explored.

Take time to sit with your desires. Reflect, write them down. Breathe into them and see where they lead you. Allow yourself the space to feel without rushing to explain or justify. Your desires don’t need to make sense to anyone but you.

And when you feel ready, speak them aloud to someone you trust. Saying, This is what I want, this is what I long for is one of the most vulnerable, liberating things you can do. It opens doors to connection, creating a space where you and your partner can meet each other without pretense.

Your desires are the fuel of your aliveness. They are sacred, and they deserve to be embraced as the beautiful, wild truths that they are. Embracing this intimate connection nurtures your sense of self-worth and recognizes the interconnectedness of sexuality, compassion, and the cosmos.

What is Sacred Sexuality?

Sacred sexuality is the practice of engaging with your erotic energy as a source of intelligence and divine power. It’s a way of being where you treat arousal as a form of truth-telling and desire as a map toward what you’ve buried or forgotten. Rooted in ancient traditions like Tantra and Taoism, sacred sexuality recognizes that your sexual energy is the same creative life force that animates the entire universe, what the Taoists call “jing”, and what Hindu Tantra frames as Shakti, the raw power of existence moving through your body.

“There is a supernal intelligence behind sexual arousal,” writes John Maxwell Taylor, “the true purpose of which is to create for us ecstatic experiences of our own divinity.” In sacred sexuality, the body becomes a living oracle. The way your yoni clenches, the heat in your chest, the ache behind your desire, all of it is data.

Sacred sexuality is also the intentional integration of sexuality with consciousness & presence. It views sexual energy as a life-generating force that is central to expanded consciousness and reaching spiritual awakening. As Dr. Jenny Wade, author of Transcendent Sex, writes: “Sexuality is a vehicle that evolution has provided for transcending the self.” In sacred sexuality, pleasure becomes a feedback system, showing where we’re awakening. It requires a willingness to meet the erotic as sacred. Sex becomes a practice of connection to something greater, to the divine.

The Supression of Sacred Sexuality

In most modern societies, the lineage of sacred sexuality has been buried under layers of suppression, both overt and subtle. Religious teachings have long framed sexuality, especially female sexuality, as sinful or dangerous. As a result, women were taught to police their desires & deny their pleasure.

But suppression didn’t stop at the pulpit. In today’s culture, we’ve simply replaced religious shame with commercial distortion. Media trains us to see sexuality through hyper-performative, male-centered, sanitized lenses. Porn flattens erotic nuance into algorithmic climax. Social media sells empowerment through appearance. Even wellness culture often repackages awakened sexuality as better orgasms, longer stamina, tighter pelvic floors, but still with no presence.

This constant conditioning disconnects us from the internal authority of our erotic intelligence. We learn to look good, but not to feel deeply. We learn to stimulate, but not to sense. We learn to fantasize, but not to trust the truth of our own arousal patterns or boundaries. As spiritual teacher Michaela Boehm writes, “When sexuality is disconnected from feeling and awareness, it loses its transformative capacity.” In other words, the suppression of sacred sexuality cuts us off from one of the most powerful forces of renewal and inner clarity we have access to.

The Connection Between Sex and Spirituality

For too long, we’ve been told that sex and spirit are opposites, one is raw, earthy, and “low,” while the other is transcendent, pure, and “high.” But they’re the same energy. Sex, when approached with presence and reverence, isn’t something that pulls you away from the divine. It’s a doorway into it and a pathway for spiritual growth and expanded consciousness.

Sexual energy is life energy. It’s the same creative force that fuels the rise of a thunderstorm, the blooming of flowers, and every breath you take. When you approach intimacy with mindfulness, you connect to this creative, divine power as something to experience and be transformed by.

Want to deepen that connection? Take a moment before intimacy to breathe together. Ground yourselves in the present with slow, deliberate breaths. Set a shared intention, something real, like Let’s be present for each other tonight, or Let’s explore without judgment. This can be part of your spiritual practice, a means to embody love and engage in spiritual growth. Then, let go of any expectations and allow the experience to unfold exactly as it needs to.

The Four Aspects That Influence Your Sexuality

Sacred sexuality is about reclaiming all the parts of yourself that make you feel alive, connected, and whole. It’s the fusion of your raw, instinctual energy with the deeper, soul-stirring desire to connect with yourself and others in ways that feel expansive and sacred. But this journey isn’t just about touching the divine; it’s also about meeting the shadows, the curiosities, the wildness, and the tenderness within.

Sacred sexuality invites you to crack open the box where these beliefs live, shine a light on them, and begin the healing process. This healing is crucial for accessing your sacred sexuality, transforming your sexual experience into a path of love and spiritual growth.

These four aspects are your map, your guide to uncovering what it means to fully embody your sensual and spiritual truth.

1. The Repressed Aspect: Breaking Free from the Shadows

Repression is the weight you’ve been carrying, the messages that told you your desires were shameful or your pleasure wasn’t valid. It’s the part of you that flinches at the thought of asking for what you truly want because somewhere along the line, you learned that it wasn’t “okay” to want at all.

But repression doesn’t have to stay hidden in the shadows. Sacred sexuality invites you to crack open the box where these beliefs live and shine a light on them. Ask yourself: Who told me this? Where did I learn to fear my own aliveness?

This isn’t about fighting those voices, but more about gently unraveling their hold on you. Replace them with new ones, your own voice, saying: My pleasure is sacred. My desires are mine to claim.

Exploration can be a practice of self-care, sacred sex, and intimacy, whether alone or with a partner. When you name your fears, when you share them with someone who sees you without judgment, they begin to lose their grip. Vulnerability is power. It’s saying, This is me, all of me, and inviting someone else to meet you there.

2. The Unlived Aspect: The Playground of Possibility

Your unlived aspect is the part of you that whispers, What if? It’s the fantasies you’ve kept tucked away, the “too wild,” “too bold,” “too different” parts of yourself that you’ve never dared to explore. These are breadcrumbs leading you back to your aliveness.

This is your sacred wildness, the fire in your belly that says, I’m alive. It is the true aliveness that comes from accessing the energy and vitality of your yoni and Vajra, emphasizing the necessity of loving attention and healing to unlock this true aliveness.

Sacred sexuality is celebrating what calls to you. A new touch? A whispered desire? A fantasy that feels both thrilling and terrifying? Start by letting these thoughts rise without editing them. Write them down, speak them to yourself, let them simmer in your awareness.

Exploration doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. It could look like trying something new on your own, like exploring the texture of a feather against your skin, or sharing a curiosity with your partner. Playfulness is sacred too, and allowing yourself to step into this space can be one of the most liberating acts of self-love.

3. The Instinctual Source: Your Sacred Wildness

Deep within you is a force that doesn’t ask for permission, it just is. It’s raw, it’s wild, and it’s unapologetically primal. This is your instinctual source, the part of you that craves touch, movement, connection, and release. For too long, many of us have been told to tone this part of ourselves down.

But sacred sexuality doesn’t ask you to tame your instincts, it asks you to honor them. This is your sacred wildness, the fire in your belly. At the soul level, your sexual intimacy becomes an expression of your deepest truths and longings, an intimate bridge between the physical and the divine. Engage with this energy on your own terms.

4. The Soul Level: Where the Divine Meets Desire

At the soul level, your sexuality becomes an expression of your deepest truths and longings, an intimate bridge between the physical and the divine. This is the part of you that craves a connection so profound that it transcends touch and words, merging your body, mind, and spirit into a state of unity. It’s the place where desire stops being about surface-level gratification and starts being about embodying the light of your spirit.

The soul level of sacred sexuality is where your fantasies take on a deeper, more symbolic meaning. They’re about longing. The longing to dissolve into something greater, to transcend separation, and to feel seen and known in ways that defy explanation. These fantasies are an expression of your spirit reaching out to connect, to your lover, to the universe, and to yourself.
